Local Actors for Protection and Recovery

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, millions of people in Ukraine have been living with violence, loss and displacement. Together with local organisations, Solidar Suisse supports people who are particularly affected by the consequences of war – while strengthening those who advocate for protection, participation and a self-determined future.

War in Ukraine

The war shapes the daily lives of millions of people. Many live in damaged homes or have been forced to leave them behind. Repeated attacks on energy systems, residential buildings and public infrastructure make it harder to access heating, water, healthcare and other essential services. Humanitarian needs remain particularly high in the eastern and southern regions of the country.

The war affects women and men in different ways and exacerbates existing inequalities. Women often take on additional care responsibilities and face increased risks of poverty, exploitation and gender-based violence. At the same time, a growing number of veterans and people injured in the war are returning to daily lives profoundly changed by their experiences. They need support to participate fully in social and working life again.

Our work on the ground

Solidar Suisse has been working in Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Together with local organisations, we initially supported people forced to flee their homes and particularly vulnerable households in war-affected regions. Our assistance included protection services, psychosocial and legal counselling, support to repair damaged homes and winter assistance. In 2025, we reached more than 8,200 people through these efforts.

Amplifying women’s voices

Through the “Voices” platform, Solidar Suisse supports women-led organisations in different regions of Ukraine. Together, they work to ensure that women – including Roma women and other marginalised groups in particular – are heard in humanitarian decision-making and can help shape assistance in their communities.

Creating opportunities for veterans

Many veterans and their families face major challenges after returning from the war. Together with local organisations, Solidar Suisse is developing initiatives to support their social and professional participation and facilitate access to appropriate support services.
