Myanmar: Aid After the Earthquake

A severe earthquake struck Myanmar in March 2025, exacerbating the hardship in a country already marked by conflict, displacement, and limited access to aid. Together with a local partner organization, Solidar Suisse is supporting people in particularly affected areas in Sagaing and Mandalay. The focus is on repairing damaged water infrastructure, restoring safe shelter, and providing direct assistance to families who have lost everything.

One Year After the Earthquake, Needs Remain High

On 28 March 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar with devastating force. Millions of people are still affected by its consequences, particularly in severely damaged and hard-to-reach rural areas. Many homes remain damaged or uninhabitable, infrastructure is heavily disrupted, and countless families still lack access to clean water, healthcare services, and other essential supplies.

The impact of the earthquake compounds an already existing crisis: protracted conflict, displacement, economic insecurity, and severe restrictions on humanitarian access. In some regions, political control prevents international organizations from operating; in others, insecurity and deteriorated infrastructure hinder aid delivery. It is precisely in these areas that support is most urgently needed. Through local partnerships, Solidar Suisse is able to operate where international assistance is limited and where the needs of affected communities often remain unseen.

Clean Water and Safe Shelter Save Lives

Since the earthquake of 28 March 2025, Solidar Suisse has been working to ensure that affected people in the Sagaing and Mandalay regions can meet their basic needs. Initially, the focus was on direct cash assistance: families received financial support to purchase urgently needed goods such as food, medicines, or materials for temporary shelter.

The current project focuses on recovery and reconstruction. Together with local communities, we are repairing damaged houses and latrines and restoring destroyed water supply systems. This helps families regain access to clean water, better protection from the elements, and improved hygiene in their daily lives—at a time when many have lost everything.

Since April 2025, Solidar Suisse has been working closely in Myanmar with an experienced local partner organization. It has long-standing roots in the affected regions and a deep understanding of people’s needs and the security context. This combination of local knowledge and targeted technical support enables assistance that takes risks seriously, reaches hard-to-access areas, and provides support as safely as possible—even under the most challenging conditions.
