Reducing Inequality
Inequality is not inevitable. It arises where people have unequal access to income, education, healthcare, a voice in political decisions and protection. Together with local partner organisations, Solidar Suisse works to ensure that disadvantaged people can exercise their rights, have a say in decisions affecting their lives and participate equally in society and the economy.
Why inequality matters to us
Inequality is not just about the distribution of income and wealth. It is also reflected in who has access to public services, who controls resources and whose voice counts in political decision-making. Discrimination on the grounds of gender, origin, social status, age, disability or residence status further deepens these inequalities. A fairer society therefore needs more than economic growth. It needs strong public services, social protection, fair working conditions and meaningful participation in democratic decision-making. It also needs policies and structures that distribute power and resources more fairly.
Our Approach
Solidar Suisse sees reducing inequality as a cross-cutting priority. Through our programmes and partnerships, we empower people and organisations to claim their social, economic and political rights. We support approaches that:
-
promote the participation of disadvantaged groups in decision-making;
-
improve access to education, healthcare, social protection and other public services;
-
promote decent work, living incomes and the protection of workers’ rights;
-
advance gender equality and dismantle discriminatory structures;
-
empower local organisations and communities to set their own priorities and help shape change.
Our strategic foundations
Policy framework for reducing inequality
This policy framework sets out the strategic approach that guides our programmes and partnerships worldwide. It is rooted in Solidar Suisse’s commitments to gender equality, localisation and social justice. It outlines how we promote inclusive participation, equitable access to public services and opportunities for marginalised groups.

Reducing inequality means recognising people not as recipients of support, but as agents of change with rights, knowledge and the power to shape their own lives. Together with local partner organisations, Solidar Suisse works to enable people to organise, represent their interests and help shape public and economic decision-making.
