There is nowhere in the world where all genders truly enjoy equal opportunities. Victories in the fight for women’s rights and against gender-based violence must be defended time and again. Women’s rights are absolutely essential for sustainable development.
Violence and limited autonomy
Women and people who do not conform to binary gender norms are often subjected to sexual, physical and psychological violence.
According to a UN study, in 2017 over 50,000 women around the world were killed by their current or former partner. According to the WHO, 35% of women are subjected to sexual violence at some point in their lives. Women are often deprived of the right to make their own decisions about their bodies and their sexuality. Equal opportunities are far from a reality. Child marriage, early teenage pregnancy and poor access to education significantly reduce girls’ prospects for the future. Women are promoted less to influential positions and globally earn less for the same work as do men.

Participation as a means to achieving equal opportunities
Solidar Suisse champions women’s rights globally. We run a range of projects that aim to ensure that all genders and disadvantaged groups can raise their concerns. They should not face discrimination, should enjoy equal opportunities and should have the right to make decisions about their lives and their bodies. We strengthen women’s organisations so that they can assert their influence. We also focus on the perspective of women* in projects on other topics and we take gender balance into account within Solidar Suisse as an organisation.
